Specialized information for healthcare professionals

At the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, comprising one of the largest establishments for pediatric cardiologic care in Japan, patients ranging from fetuses and neonates to adults are hospitalized in three wards according to their age. These inpatients suffer from congenital heart diseases, arrhythmia, pulmonary circulation diseases, Kawasaki disease, cardiomyopathy, and chronic heart failure, requiring heart transplantation, among others. The Departments of Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery, and Perinatology and Gynecology together form the Division of Perinatal and Pediatric Cardiology, a larger unit of medical care at the NCVC. This division handles the whole spectrum of heart diseases that affect human growth and development from the perinatal period to childhood and adulthood, including medical care for female patients with pregnancy and child birth complicated by heart diseases.

The department covers a diverse range of medical care: the diagnosis of congenital heart diseases using echocardiography and catheterization; catheter-based treatment for atrial septal defect and other congenital heart diseases; preoperative and postoperative intensive care for congenital heart diseases; diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias associated with complex congenital heart diseases; new pharmacotherapies for pulmonary circulation diseases, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension and Eisenmenger's syndrome; diagnosis based on three-dimensional imaging using echocardiography and MSCT; cardiac function diagnosis using nuclear medicine techniques; management and treatment of patients with Kawasaki disease in the late postoperative phase; management and pharmacotherapy of myocardial diseases; heart transplantation and ventricular assist system implantation for patients with chronic heart failure; and diagnosis and treatment of adult patients with congenital heart diseases, whose numbers have recently been increasing following improvement in surgical treatment. For 38 years since its establishment, the Department of Pediatric Cardiology has constantly led Japan and the rest of the world with its advanced medical care in all areas of specialization practiced by it.
