After completing a three-year latter-term postgraduate training program in cardiovascular medicine at a private hospital in Osaka, I started to work as a specialist-in-training in the NCVC Hospital's Cardiovascular Care Unit (CCU) in my sixth year as a physician. My specialties include angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and cardiac catheterization. In the catheterization laboratory, I am learning from senior specialists with broad expertise and excellent skills daily. I am also learning a lot at the weekly coronary artery conferences. At these conferences, experienced physicians get together and discuss the optimal treatment strategies based on scientific evidence and personal experience.

NCVC Hospital offers many opportunities for making academic presentations and participating in research projects. I conducted a clinical study using a myocardial infarction registry database. I had the privilege of presenting the results at national and international meetings. In addition, I am now involved in a prospective clinical study launched in cooperation with the NCVC Research Institute.

NCVC is committed to promoting evidence-based medicine. NCVC provides an environment suitable for research. I have many mentors whom I can turn to when I have obstacles to overcome. We also have access to expert statisticians.

I am spending valuable time as a specialist-in-training at the NCVC, which is home to enthusiastic physicians from across the nation. My first year at the CCU flew very fast. I will work with utmost effort to meet my expectations.

I joined NCVC Hospital's CCU as a specialist-in-training during my seventh year as a physician. Previously, I had finished a three-year latter-term postgraduate training program in cardiovascular medicine at a private hospital. My responsibilities include percutaneous intervention (PCI) in patients with angina pectoris and myocardial infarction and interpretation of myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and coronary CT angiography scans. In cooperation with senior and staff physicians, I am engaged in acute cardiovascular care. At the CCU case conferences held every morning, treatment strategies are reviewed and discussed from the viewpoint of evidence-based medicine. I discuss treatment approaches based on cardiohemodynamics with my supervisors. I am required to develop logical and coherent cardiovascular treatment strategies. NCVC Hospital provides a framework for practicing medicine in an evidence-based, scientific manner.

NCVC Hospital provides ample opportunities for making academic presentations and conducting research. I am currently engaged in clinical studies of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and MRI evaluation of coronary plaques. I had a valuable experience of making a presentation at an international conference last year. I am very encouraged to see so many NCVC physicians actively seeking to publish their work in peer-reviewed academic journals. I am ready to do everything I can to discover and publish new scientific findings.

Because NCVC Hospital attracts highly motivated physicians from all over Japan, it is not an easy place for me, but I am confident that this is where I can grow, learn, and develop. I am grateful that I am given the opportunity to engage in health care in such a wonderful institution. I will do my best for the remaining days of my contract term.

The Division of Coronary Diseases encourages its junior physicians to make presentations of their individual and collaborative research results at national and international conferences.

In addition, the Division provides training and education on PCI.
