Overview of the Division

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of NCVC handles approximately 300 deliveries per year. Although this figure includes deliveries without complications, the main task of the department is the management of pregnancy and deliveries while taking advantage of the features of the center. Specifically, we focus on the management of pregnancies and deliveries in (1) women with heart disease, (2) women with cerebrovascular disease, and (3) fetuses with heart diseases. Our center has many top-level specialists in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease who cooperate with the specialists in this division on the management of pregnancies and deliveries.

The treatment and management of heart disease have remarkably improved in recent years. Women who would have given up getting pregnant in the past now have a chance. We provide counseling before pregnancy and explain the changes in a mother's body associated with pregnancy and the effects of pregnancy on the heart in an easy-to-understand manner based on experience. After counseling, if a woman chooses to become pregnant, we ask her to fully understand our medical advice. We manage the pregnancy intensively in cooperation with other divisions, while respecting her preferences and the family members' intentions.

Diagnostic technology for evaluating heart disease in fetuses has also improved dramatically. Based on an accurate diagnosis, we can simulate the clinical course after birth. We discuss what is the best type of delivery and how to prepare for it with pediatricians, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. This is the only way to manage pregnancies and deliveries in a manner that leads to favorable treatment of diseases after birth.

Baby girls with heart disease born at our center grow up, become pregnant, and have babies of their own at the center. We hope that our center is the place where people's lives are connected with the next generation.
