Department of Neurosurgery

Outline of the Department of Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery at the NCVC Hospital is most distinctively characterized by its capability to perform microsurgery, endovascular surgery (catheterization), and stereostatic radiosurgery (using gamma knife) at the highest levels. We have a dedicated intensive neurosurgical care unit(NCU) that is ready to conduct emergency neurosurgical interventions and endovascular procedures around the clock. We treat acute stroke patients in coordination with the Departments of Cerebrovascular Internal Medicine and Neurology. Regarding nonacute treatment, we accept patients referred from other medical institutions for all types of cerebrovascular diseases, including cerebral aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), Moyamoya disease, and carotid artery stenosis. We have achieved particularly encouraging results in managing cases that would have been nearly impossible to handle conventionally by combining therapeutic approaches such as surgery, catheterization, and gamma knife radiosurgery. Applying the skills and techniques developed through the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases, we also wield our effort on the treatment of other diseases including benign brain tumor, trigeminal neuralgia, and hemifacial spasm.

At the Department of Neurosurgery, we endeavor to continue improving our medical expertise, as well as our interactions with our patients, which we hope to be thoughtful and sincere. Many patients referred to the department have conditions that cannot be handled using a simple treatment plan. Therefore, we provide the most thorough information possible within the time available, explaining what we intend to do, so that we can begin treatment, with both parties fully convinced.

Developing excellent human resources for the future is another important mission of the Department of Neurosurgery. Accordingly, we provide training to young physicians who come from all parts of Japan, helping them become fully skilled neurosurgeons or specialists in the surgical or endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. In fact, many leading Japanese neurosurgeons have been trained at the department. For neurosurgeons active across the country, we regularly organize educational seminars on surgical interventions and endovascular procedures for cerebrovascular diseases. In the medical research field, we have played a central role in many clinical studies on cerebrovascular diseases, communicating our research results and evidence to the international research community.
