Catheterization for the treatment of abdominal aortic occlusion

Before stenting
After stenting
Abdominal aortic occlusion caused by arteriosclerosis has been usually treated with surgical bypass. However, there have been no treatment options for elderly patients or patients with serious comorbidities who are considered to be high-risk candidates for surgical bypass. Recent advancements in catheterization have expanded its use to treating abdominal aortic occlusion. For example, a male patient in his 80s had occlusion from the abdominal aorta just below the renal artery to the right iliac artery (indicted with arrows). The risks associated with surgical treatment were considered to be high because of his advanced age and concomitant coronary artery disease. This patient was treated with catheterization and had a favorable outcome. Severe intermittent claudication observed before treatment resolved. The patient resumed his daily activities. This case was reported in a medical journal. (JACC Cardiovascular Interventions 9: 856-858, 2016)

Catheterization for the treatment of renal artery occlusion

Our efforts in treating renal artery occlusion were reported in the Yomiuri Newspaper. It was also reported in a medical journal (ESC Heart Failure 2:160-163, 2015)
