Endocrinology and Metabolism

The social environment has undergone great change in Japan recently. An increasing number of people lack exercise and indulge in overeating, resulting in the increase of diseases such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. These diseases are significant risk factors that aggravate arteriosclerosis. This means that there has been an increase in diseases originating from arteriosclerosis, including angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, stroke, and arteriosclerosis obliterans. Moreover, diabetes leads to disorders of kidneys, retina, and nerves, and obesity leads to complications such as sleep apnea syndrome.
In the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, we aim at providing specialized medical care for patients with these diseases and preventing complications on the basis of cutting-edge medical knowledge. In particular, we focus on redressing insulin resistance (the condition where insulin becomes less efficient and increases in blood), visceral fat obesity (the condition where fat accumulates around the abdomen rather than subcutaneously), and dyslipidemia, thereby exerting our effort into the prevention of the progression of arteriosclerosis.
